Holiday Math!

I posted a few pictures earlier of the kids working on their wreaths (long division with remainders, 2-digit dividends).   After they finished those, we made strings of bells (3-digit dividends) and then tree ornaments (4-digit dividends).  When we were first working on their wreaths, kids were taking about 45 minutes to complete 8-9 problems and finding it a little frustrating--and that was with smaller numbers.  By the time we got to the ornaments, kids were doing 15-18 problems in the same amount of time, with much less frustration and fewer mistakes.  Practice makes perfect! :)

We also did a fun Hanukkah themed activity on Friday.  Each child was given 9 paper "candles" to measure.  Once they had taken measurements for length and width, they found the perimeter and area of each candle, and then glued them all together to make a menorah.
